DH and I were talking about Christmas shopping the other night. We don't do Christmas shopping anymore for several reasons. Not the least of which is the unusual phenomenon of the IQ drop that happens in proportion to the proximity of shopping malls. Have you ever noticed it? It seems to happen to people even in their cars when they're not quite AT the malls. And it seems to get worse the closer you get to the areas where the toy and electronic stores are located. It's astounding.
People who drive with their left turn signal on, IN the left driving lane, for two miles and then suddenly swerve over two lanes to turn RIGHT into the shopping mall...all while that little left turn blinker just *BLINKS* away!
People who like to look at their bags full of booty....whilst sitting at green lights(plural intended).
People who stand in line for hours to get a special on something...that was on sale for less money four weeks ago...without the lines.
I vowed years ago that I wouldn't ever be one of them. I stay home and bake cookies and make absolutely SINFUL candies for all of my loved ones. And for those who don't want candy? Well, honestly we haven't got any of those yet.
Before we moved away from our family 3 years ago we had a Christmas party that included the whole family. We had a very little house but the basement was fully finished and we had a really nice patio room added onto the back of the house. *sigh* I miss that room....
Anyway, for that party I'd spend two solid weeks making sweets of all sorts for the party. I never had to pack up any leftovers. EVER! LOL My brother in law especially misses the Chocolate Oatmeal No-Bake cookies that I make every year. I've been making a lot of them to prevent the fistfights....LOL
Even back then I'd still keep the Christmas shopping to an absolute minimum. I like to make things for people. Back when I had the time for stitching I would make something fancy for one or two people every year. I got really good at a lot of fancy needlework techniques while making some really fun or elegant things for my family.
I wonder if that's something that more people should try to do. Make one or two things that are special for Christmas instead of buying something. See how it goes over. Look at one person in your family and see what things they really like and make something that relates to that which they love. I've made lace bookmarks for avid readers. I've stitched a picture of a chocolate moose for someone whose specialty dessert is...Chocolate Mousse.
If you start early enough you could have a lot of fun making just one special thing every year.
But if you like to shop I have something for you today. Even if you never actually use this, even if you never actually SAY this, you'll still get a giggle from THINKING it whenever you meet up with some of the more...challenging... in-duh-viduals while you're out shopping.
