Newest additions....

I decided to take a break this weekend from my closet building. I've decided to remodel the bedroom closet and I've been cutting, drilling, sanding and painting every day this week. I'm taking a weekend off. lol

With a completely clean table in the craft room (which is where I've been laying the wood for painting) I decided to do some book pages in one of my altered books. I played with a LOT of stuff.

One of the things that I ordered recently came wrapped in a newspaper page that had these crocuses pictured. Perfect for a day when it has been snowing since 4 am. Yes.... I know this first hand. I ran out of melatonin two days ago. :(

This next one was just painting a lot of things in white that I consider prettier than all of this snow we're getting. Just simple outlining and shading with white paint and stencils.

This one started as an exercise in resist painting. I did the right hand side by first stenciling some gears with Perfect Medium, then heat embossing with UTEE. Then I layered some turquoise paint, waited for it to dry, then wiped off the embossed area with a baby wipe. Then I did the embossing thing again and painted with the yellow. Baby wipe. Then embossed, painted and baby wiped with the white.

On the left hand side of the page I did because of something in one of my Somerset Studio mags that they did with pictures from fashion magazines. Well, I haven't got any fashion magazines.... but I do have some old pattern books. The most interesting part about this is that I didn't consciously look for a dress pattern that matched the colors. I only had in mind one that the pic wasn't overlapped with another model. The mind works in mysterious ways.....

I traced and cut out copies of the model, one in cardstock and two out of discarded book pages. I sort of stenciled some black outlines, then glued down the book paper models, then the actual pic from the pattern book.

Then I used the cardstock version to trace and stencil on this page. I smeared a heavy coat of Perfect Medium (from the re-inker bottle), then put down a heavy coating of UTEE, heated it up, then painted around it in black and then did a bunch of stenciling around the empty space.

That's it for today. After cooking breakfast, doing the dishes, shoveling the driveway (EW), sanding two boards and then starting laundry.... I think after this post I deserve a hot coffee, a chocolate bar and a blanket. ;)

Stay warm!

Happy New Year

Yeah....I'm a bad blogger. But I have been making stuff.

My best friend Amberlee got me a fabulous Christmas present. A hat shaper ! Follow the link to see what a hat shaper is and then buy one!!! I have no affiliation....just a very happy customer!

I should start by saying that I have never made a hat before. And I don't know any of the "proper" methods for making a hat. I know how to glue, I know how to sew, I know fabric and I know paper.

I'm going from there. lol

I made a quick layout to show you the bowler/derby hat I made using frayed denim scraps and Mod Podge. It's a very stiff hat. In order to attach the fabric under the brim (which is also part of the lining) I had to use a tiny hole punch all the way around the brim so I could do the blanket edge stitching. It took some time but it came out just the way I wanted. And that is what matters.

For the Mod Podging of the scraps to make the basic body of the hat I covered the hat shaper form with plastic warp to protect the form. I didn't want to take the chance of permanently gluing the fabric to the form. I want to make lots of hats.

The next hat I'm working on is using buckram, concentrated liquid starch and stretchy fleece that my daughter picked out. She wants her hat to be orange and fuzzy. lol I'm sewing this one for most of the construction after I make the sturdy underlayment from the buckram. That'll be another post.

So here is my new hat:

Not bad for a first hat. I've got two more hat shapers coming to me. One is a fedora. I think I'll use my Valentine's day novelty fabric for that one.... Or maybe the natural colored felt...

So many wild possibilities!
